Lauryn Contini scored her first career goal in the first half
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team had its third-straight win within its grasp but a late equalizer ended Thursday's match with New Hampshire in a 1-1 draw at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Lauryn Contini got the Cards (2-0-1) on the scoresheet in the first half and they held the lead until the 86th minute when New Hampshire (2-0-1) leveled the score.
The Cardinals controlled play in the first half as they held most of the possession and turned that into opportunities in their offensive third. They broke through in the 30th minute when Emersen Jennings took her run into a dangerous area and sent a cross back towards the middle box. Contini beat a pair of New Hampshire defenders to the ball and flicked it past the keeper for the goal. It was Contini's first goal of her career and Jennings first assist of the season and it put the Cards up 1-0.
That was the score at halftime as the Cardinals held a 9-0 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. It was the third-straight game this season the Cardinals have not allowed a shot on goal in the first half.
In the second half, the Cardinals continued to get chances in their offensive third but were unable to get an insurance goal. That proved to be costly as Delaney Lappin capitalized on a heavy touch in the 86th minute to level the score at 1-1. The Cardinals pushed forward after the tying goal but were unable to come away with a late winner and it ended in a draw.
Up next for the Cardinals is their first road trip of the season to close out the weekend. The Cardinals will head up I-71 to take on Northern Kentucky. The Cards and the Norse will square off from Highland Heights at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
