Louisville saw its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision at No. 25 Vanderbilt on Tuesday night.
Louisville (29-19) saw its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
The Cardinals needed just three batters to plate the game's first run on Tuesday. JT Benson drew a leadoff walk before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zion Rose then doubled down the right field line to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Vanderbilt (33-16) tied the game up immediately in the bottom half of the first, hitting the very first pitch into the seats in right-center. The Commodores then loaded the bases with nobody out, but Carson Liggett came out of the bullpen and limited the damage.
Liggett allowed just one run to score and then retired six straight across the second and third innings. Vanderbilt looked like it had a second solo homer in the second inning, but Eddie King Jr. leapt at the wall and brought the potential homer back.
Kaleb Corbett stretched Louisville's retired batter streak to 10 with a perfect fourth in his lone inning of work, but Vanderbilt finally got back on the board with two runs in the fifth.
Five Louisville pitchers combined to keep the Commodores quiet in the sixth, seventh and eighth leaving the Cardinals needing three heading into the ninth.
Isaac Humphrey made it a two-run game with a one-out solo homer in the final frame. King was then hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate. A strikeout brought the Cardinals down to their final out, but Luke Napleton kept the game alive with a single into left. Ryan McCoy was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, however a strikeout left the potential tying runs in scoring position.
Rose and Gavin Kilen had two hits apiece with Rose tallying a pair of doubles and Kilen recording his 20th two-bagger of the year.
Louisville concludes it's seven-game road swing with a weekend series at North Carolina. The series begins on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. ET from Chapel Hill, N.C.
