May 16, 2024 | Baseball
Louisville picked up 5-3 and 5-1 victories over Notre Dame.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team used the long ball to its advantage on its way to a 5-3 and 5-1 doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame on Thursday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (31-22, 15-14 ACC) got a walk-off home run from Gavin Kilen in game one and a three homer day from Eddie King Jr. to power its way to two wins.
The Cardinals fell behind 2-0 in game one after a pair of solo home runs, however King's first home run of the day tied the game at two apiece in the bottom of the second.
King then launched his second of the day in the fourth, a solo shot that gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
The game held at 3-2 until the eighth when Notre Dame (27-24, 9-20) manufactured a run to tie things at three.
Tucker Biven took over in the ninth for the Cards and gave up three singles to load the bases with only one out. However, he induced a groundball up the middle that Kilen turned into a double play to keep the game tied.
In the bottom half, King lined a one-out single to right field and Kilen then hammered an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for Louisville's first walk-off homer since Ben Metzinger in April of 2022.
Sebastian Gongora turned in a strong starting effort in Thursday's opener, giving up just two runs in 5.2 innings. Biven (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.
Evan Webster (5-2) was stellar in the second half of the doubleheader, allowing just a solo home run in six innings of work.
Meanwhile, JT Benson started the scoring with a two-run double in the third and Isaac Humphrey followed with a run-scoring single to cap a three-run third.
Two innings later, King hit a two-run homer for his third shot of the day.
Webster exited with a 5-1 lead and Kaleb Corbett took care of the final three innings, facing just one batter over the minimum for his second save of the year.
King was 4-for-7 on the day with three home runs and five RBIs to lead the Cardinals. Benson added four hits of his own, while Kilen tallied three including the walk-off homer.
Louisville and Notre Dame are scheduled to wrap up the series on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET. The Cardinals will recognize its senior class prior to the game.
