Cards Fall to No. 20/15 Virginia Tech in ACC Doubleheader

Cards fall 11-1 in five innings and 5-2 in 10 inniings
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville fell to No. 20/15 Virginia Tech 11-1 in five innings and 5-2 in 10 innings to open Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday evening at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals (16-7, 0-2 ACC) and the Hokies (17-4-1, 5-0 ACC) will conclude the series Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in an ACC Network televised game.

Virginia Tech 11 – Louisville 1
In the opening game of the series, the Hokies used a pair of RBI singles to jump to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Â

The Cardinals responded in the third when Ally Alexander led off the home half of the inning with in infield single. A miscue allowed Chelsea Mack to reach and a walk to Daisy Hess loaded the bases for Riley Frizell who earned another walk, cutting the lead in half.

Virginia Tech used seven hits and two walks to put up an eight-spot in the fifth for the 11-1 victory.

Alyssa Zabala (10-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings.
Â
Lyndsey Grein (5-1) picked up the win, surrendering one hit and one unearned with five strikeouts in five innings.

Virginia Tech 5 – Louisville 2 (10 innings)
In the nightcap, the Cardinals and Hokies battled for nine innings before Cori McMillan's three-run homer in the top of the 10th gave the Hokies a 5-2 lead.

Virginia Tech took a 2-0 lead behind solo home runs by Bre Peck and Emma Ritter in the second and fifth innings respectively.

Louisville countered in the bottom of the sixth when Mack singled, moved to third on an error and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Hess singled and eventually came home on an RBI hit by Vanessa Miller to even the score at 2-2.

The teams were locked in a stalemate through the next three innings before the Hokies broke through with three runs. Michelle Chatfield delivered a two-out double and Peck was intentionally walked to bring up McMillan, who sent a home run over the fence in left center field to put Virginia Tech on top 5-2.

Zabala (10-3) took the loss surrendering three earned runs on three hits and striking out one in 3.1 innings. Mack went 3-for-4 with a run to lead Louisville at the plate.

Emma Lemley (4-1) picked up the win, allowing one hit and striking out 11 in 4.1 innings. Ritter and Peck had two hits apiece. Â
NOTES:
- Louisville is now 2-2 at Ulmer Stadium
- The Cards are now 1-1 in extra innings this season.
- The 10-inning game marked Louisville's longest outing since May 6, 2023 when they fell 6-4 at No. 3/3 Florida State
