Louisville’s late-inning rally falls short in 4-3 loss to the Hokies
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team staged a late-inning rally, but fell short to No. 20/15 Virginia Tech 4-3 in their ACC series finale Sunday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville (16-8, 0-3 ACC) will continue its eight-game home stretch this weekend, hosting the Cardinal Classic. Game one for the Cards will be against South Dakota (12-12) on Thursday, March 14 with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will air on ACC Network.Â

Virginia Tech (18-3-1, 5-0 ACC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind a solo home run by Addy Greene in the first inning.Â

The Hokies tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Maija Louko led the inning off with a single to left field before crossing home on a double by Emma Ritter. With the bases loaded, Bre Peck singled to the pitcher to bring home Cori McMillan. Virginia Tech scratched across another run in the top of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 4-0.Â

The Cardinals responded in the home half of the sixth to put their first run on the board. Daisy Hess hit a double down the left field line to begin the inning. Hess later scored on a single by Riley Frizell, cutting the lead to 4-1.
Still down three runs entering the bottom of the seventh, Louisville put together a rally. Ally Alexander got the rally started with a one-out single and Kiley Goff was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and bring the tying run to plate. One out later, Hess launched a triple down the right field line, bringing home two to make the score 4-3 with the go-ahead run at the plate, but a groundout ended the game.

Hess went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and two RBIs and Alexander went 2-for-2 to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Brooke Gray (3-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.Â

Emma Mazzarone (5-1) picked up the win, surrendering one hit and one walk while striking out three in 2.0 innings. Louko went 3-for-3 with a run to pace the Hokies offensively.
