March 21, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
Kokoro Nakazawa grabbed her eighth hat trick of the season in the win.
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Kokoro Nakazawa recorded her eighth hat trick of the season in leading the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over Liberty this afternoon.
The Cardinals move to 5-5 (2-2 ACC) on the season and the Flames fall to 3-6 (0-0 ASUN).
"We got off to a great start offensively in the first quarter," said Head Coach Scott Teeter. "Liberty made some good adjusments and we needed to realize that sooner than we did this afternoon."
After a quick pair of goals from Kylea Dobson to open up the game, the Cards grabbed an early 2-0 lead. Kokoro Nakazawa and Allegra Catalano scored back-to-back goals with a response from Liberty, putting the game at 4-2. Ava Peers scored her first collegiate goal and Madi McKee tallied her first goal of the season to close out the first quarter, 6-2.
"It was really exciting to see Ava get her first goal," said Teeter. "I am proud of both her and Madi for sticking to it and making those plays when we needed it."
The second quarter did not see a ton on the offensive side, with Liberty scoring two goals and Kokoro Nakazawa tallying one. The Cards went into the locker room up 7-4 at the half.
Louisville was unable to find the back of the net in the third quarter, as Liberty got within one goal going into the final frame. However, the Cards responded quickly with four straight goals courtesy of Nicole Perroni, Izzy Seikel, Kokoro Nakazawa, and Maggie McMahon. The Flames ended the game with two of their own but could not complete the comeback, going scoreless in the last six minutes.
Dobson ended with two goals, an assist, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Perroni had two points but contributed four ground balls and tied her career-high with five caused turnovers. McKee tallied a season-high seven draw controls.
"Madi did fantastic on the draw today," said Teeter. "In order to play well, we need to continue getting those crucial draws and focus on staying in the game for the full 60 minutes."
Liberty's Jordan Sheive led all scorers with four goals. Goalkeeper Mara Tellers had 12 saves in 60:00 minutes at the net.
The Cards will continue their road stint as they travel to No. 12 North Carolina on Saturday, March 23. The opening draw will occur at 11 a.m. ET and can be watched on the ACCNX.
