Cardinals Plate 19 More Runs, Extend Win Streak to Five
March 01, 2024 | Baseball
Louisville defeated Youngstown State 19-1 on Friday.
Louisville (5-4) has now scored double-digit runs in five consecutive games for the first time since April of 2019, having tallied 85 runs over the last five contests.
Sebastian Gongora dominated on the mound Friday afternoon. The southpaw worked six innings allowing just an unearned run while matching his career high with 10 strikeouts.
Kade Grundy followed with five strikeouts in two shutout innings, while Jared Lessman took care of the final frame. The 16 strikeouts on Friday were the most for the Cards since tallying 17 against NC State on April 22, 2022.
The offense started immediately on Friday for the Cardinals. The first three batters reached in the bottom of the first and Brandon Anderson lined a single back up the middle to plate the first two runs and a throwing error pushed a third run across. Anderson then scored on a sacrifice fly from Gavin Kilen.
Anderson added two more RBIs in the second inning, hitting his second home run of the season to straightaway centerfield. The Cardinals then picked up RBI knocks from Alex Alicea and JT Benson in the third before Alicea tripled home two more in the fourth to make it 10-0.
Youngstown State (0-7) plated its lone run of the night in the fifth despite Gongora punching out four batters in the inning.
Isaac Humphrey went the opposite way for a three-run home run in the sixth, his first of the year, as part of a five-run frame.
In the eighth, Eddie King Jr. lined a ball to the wall in right-center. The ball got wedged under the fence, but the outfielder picked up the baseball and King never stopped running, recording the first inside-the-park home run by a Louisville player since Isaiah Howes in 2005.
Logan Beard launched a two-run home run later in the frame and Kilen capped the big day at the plate with a run-scoring double.
Anderson, Humphrey, Kilen, Alicea and Luke Napleton all had multi-hit games as part of the 16-hit attack.
Louisville and Youngstown State continue the weekend series on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
