Perroni and Kokoro Nakazawa had hat tricks this evening
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nicole Perroni and Kokoro Nakazawa recorded hat tricks this evening but the Cardinals were unable to get the victory, falling to Virginia Tech 14-10 in their first conference game this season. Louisville drops to 1-4 (0-1 ACC) and Virginia Tech is now 4-1 (1-0 ACC).
The Cards got off to a hot start this evening with a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Perroni had three unanswered goals to end the first, tallying her 21st career hat trick.
However, the Hokies opened up the second quarter with a 3-0 run after a goal by Claire Shotta and two by Olivia Vergano. Perroni scored her fourth goal of the evening and the score was tied at 5-5 going into halftime break.
Virginia Tech came out of the locker room with momentum, scoring five straight goals – all from different players. Kokoro Nakazawa halted the run with a late third quarter goal and Rian Adkins scored her first goal of the season off of a free position attempt to end the quarter.
Kokoro Nakazawa and Kylea Dobson attempted to close the gap in the fourth quarter but could not stop the Hokies' offense. Dobson had another goal of her own and an assist with under five minutes to play. She tallied two goals this evening.
"I thought we battled for the full 60 minutes," said Head Coach Scott Teeter. "The third quarter got away from us a little bit, we lost our composure. We got behind but gave ourselves an opportunity in the end to keep the game close."
Perroni led with six draw controls and added two ground balls and a caused turnover. Goalkeeper Sara Addeche recorded eight saves in 60:00 at the net.
Virginia Tech's Olivia Vergano led all scorers with five goals and also added five draw controls. The Hokies' goalie, Jocelyn Torres recorded nine saves this evening.
The Cards will continue their conference slate with a road trip to Pittsburgh on Saturday, March 2. The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. (noon) ET.
