PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Kokoro and Negai Nakazawa combined for nine goals this afternoon, propelling Louisville to its first ACC win of the season over Pittsburgh, 19-11. The Cardinals move to 2-4 (1-1 ACC) and the Panthers drop to 2-4 (0-2 ACC).
Kokoro Nakazawa tallied a career-high five goals and a career-high three assists while Negai Nakazawa recorded a career-high four goals on just four shots.
"They (Kokoro and Negai) were on point today," said Head Coach Scott Teeter. "Their shots were falling and they were working hard for excellent looks. It was a great day for both of them."
Seven Cards scored on the afternoon with additional multiple goal showings by Nicole Perroni (4), Allegra Catalano (2), and Kylea Dobson (2).
"This was a great team win," said Coach Teeter. "We had a lot of players step up in different areas, highlighted by Kokoro and Negai as well as Perroni who played as a faceguard today and was still able to record some great stats."
The Cards started off strong, scoring two early goals in the first two minutes of the game. Back-to-back goals by Kokoro Nakazawa gave Louisville the 3-0 lead but Pitt responded with two of their own. Louisville was up 4-2 after the first 15 minutes of action.
Three straight goals to begin the second frame gave the Cards a 7-2 advantage but the Panthers had back-to-back goals to close the gap. Perroni and Kokoro Nakazawa each recorded free position goals and Pitt's Jenna Hendrickson responded, making the score 9-5. The Nakazawa sisters each scored within eight seconds of each other and the Cards went into the locker room up 12-7 at half.
Pitt was able to get within four with six minutes to go in the third but the Cards closed out the quarter with three straight goals, pushing the lead to 16-9.
Perroni scored her fourth goal of the afternoon to open up the final quarter and Catalano recorded her second of the day with around seven minutes to go. The Panthers added two more but Tiffany Natoli got in on the action, securing the eight-point win for the Cards.
Pitt's Camdyn O'Donnell and Ava Washington led the way in scoring for the Panthers, each recording hat tricks. Jenna Hendrickson followed with two goals but recorded a team-high three assists.
This marks the Cards' second consecutive win over the Panthers and the largest point margin in series history.
