
Women's Tennis Concludes Successful Weekend at Martha Thorn Invitational

Germany Davis reaches Flight B finals
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team concludes their second fall tournament at the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia.
Sophomore Germany Davis advanced to the Flight B finals after going 2-0 to start the tournament.
The Cardinals tallied 13 singles victories on the weekend to go along with six doubles victories.
Friday
The first day of the tournament was a success for UofL with all six singles players winning their opening matches of their respective flights. Two out of the three doubles pairings also won their opening matches, with the newcomer duo of Alice Otis and Elisabeth Lila advancing to the semifinals.
In the Flight A singles, Lika Peresypkina defeated West Virginia's Mille Haagensen in a three-set thriller 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). Otis won a hard-fought match against West Virginia's Misha Kucharova 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).
In Flight B singles action, Berta Miret defeated Maryland's Ema Kovacevic 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Davis made quick work of Western Michigan's Frida Wejimerman 6-3, 6-0.
Lila and Elena Noguero rounded out Friday's singles action for the Cards in Flight C. Lila took a commanding win over Audrey Smitek of Western Michigan 6-1, 6-4. Noguero defeated Katherine Hung of the Terrapins's 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
In doubles action, the duo of Miret and Peresypkina defeated Penn State's Patricia Grigoras and Jordina Cegarra 7-5. Otis and Lila also beat a duo from Penn State, besting Yvonne Zuffova and Kate Zink 6-3. Davis and Noguero fought hard but ultimately dropped their opening match against the Mountaineer's pairing of Kucharova and Maja Dodik 6-3.
Davis and Noguero kicked off the second round of doubles action with a win over Duquesne's Jasa Roka and Taisia Yukunina 6-4. The pairing of Miret and Peresypkina fell to Alexandra O'Brien and Kaya Rand of the Duke's 6-3. The duo of Otis and Lila secured a second-round win versus Maryland's Katherine Hung Tamari Gagoshidze 7-5.
Saturday
Louisville began the second day of competition with a doubles win, as the duo of Davis and Noguero bested Duquesne's Denisse Arinez Guilarte and Sofia Lopez-Linares Perez 6-3. The pairing of Miret and Peresypkina dropped their final match of the tournament, falling to Maryland's Kovacevic and Oliwia Orlinska 6-4. The Cardinals duo of Otis and Lila remained undefeated, besting the Nittany Lion duo of Jelena Vico and Zuffova 6-3.
In singles action, Davis advanced to the Flight B finals after defeating Penn State's Cegarra 6-4, 6-2. Miret fell in her semifinal matchup, losing to PSU's Vico 6-4, 6-1.
Peresypkina also prevailed in her semifinal match in Flight A, defeating Orlinska of the Terrapin's 6-3, 6-3. Otis dropped her first match of the fall season, losing to the Nittany Lion's Grigoras 6-1, 6-4.
Noguero and Lila both prevailed in their Flight C semifinals matchups as Noguero defeated Duquesne's Rand 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Lila got the best of Maryland's Gagoshidze in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Sunday
In the final day of action, The Cards looked to finish strong as Otis defeated UM's Orlinska in the Flight A consolation match 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
In the Flight B final, Davis fought hard but ultimately fell to Vico of Penn State, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Miret secured a victory in the Flight B consolation match due to retirement.
Lila made quick work of West Virginia's Haagensen 6-1, 6-1 to end the weekend undefeated in singles and doubles action.
Noguero fell to Kucharova of West Virginia 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) to close out the invitational.
The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships next weekend with play kicking off on October 10 and concluding on the 14th.
