October 03, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Gage Guerra netted a pair of goals, while TJ Kahoalii scored his first collegiate goal.
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw in a wild match at Cal on Thursday.
Louisville (4-3-3, 0-2-3 ACC) has now earned consecutive road draws in ACC play after a 1-1 tie at Boston College on Sunday.
The six total goals in Thursday's match made it the highest-scoring contest of the season for the Cardinals, while UofL's three tallies matched its top goal total in 2024.
The first half belonged to Gage Guerra as the senior forward secured both ends of a brace in just over a two-minute span.
In the 20th minute, Michael Lee sent a deflected cross into the box toward the back post. Guerra took the high-lofted ball off the volley and hammered it home with the left foot as he fell to the ground.
The opening goal was the fourth of the season for Guerra and his second straight match with a tally. The assist was the third for Lee, as it was the second straight match Lee and Guerra linked up.
Guerra then struck again two minutes later. He dribbled his way into the attacking third and beat a pair of defenders before taking a shot from the edge of the box. His shot was misplayed by the Cal keeper and got through his legs to make it 2-0 Louisville.
It was the first multi-goal match of the season for the senior and his third in a Louisville uniform.
Cal (3-5-2, 0-3-2) answered three minutes later, putting its first goal home to cut Louisville's lead in half. However, the match would hold at 2-1 to halftime with AJ Piela making four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Louisville stretched its advantage back to two in the 60th minute, with Guerra once again involved in the attack. Guerra got on the end of a perfect through ball down the middle and his sliding attempt to put it on frame was deflected by the keeper, however it bounced right to TJ Kahoalii in front of goal and the freshman tapped it in for his first collegiate goal.
The margin was back at two for a very short time though, as the Bears got back in the scoring column 65 seconds later to bring them within one at 3-2.
Cal went down a man in the 69th minute after a second yellow card was issued, but Louisville played with the advantage for only four minutes. Guerra's match came to an end in the 73rd minute after a straight red card was issued for a foul, putting the match at 10 men apiece for the final 17 minutes.
The Bears then found the game-tying goal in the 74th minute, striking from the edge of the box to level things at three apiece.
Despite both sides searching for the go-ahead goal, the only shot over the final 15 minutes belonged to Ethan Subachan, but it was kept out of the net with a strong play from a tight angle.
Louisville was outshot 14-7 on the day but held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Cardinals now return home for four straight matches, the first of which comes on Tuesday against Lipscomb. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
