
No. 2 Cardinals Set to Face No. 5 Stanford at KFC Yum!

Top five showdown on Sunday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The 9-0 and No. 2-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team heads to the KFC Yum! Center to take on No. 5 Stanford in a top-five matchup with No. 5 Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
The Cardinals are undefeated to begin the season, having won their first nine matches matches. UofL is coming off a sweep of instate rival No. 21 Kentucky.  Outside hitter Charitie Luper had 13 kills while hitting .385 to lead the Cards to a 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 win over the Wildcats on Wednesday night before a record-setting crowd of 12,760.
Louisville hit .344 in the match with 44 kills, six aces, and six blocks. Outside hitter Anna DeBeer recorded nine kills and four digs, opposite hitter Aiko Jones tallied nine kills and three blocks, and middle blocker Cara Cresse had seven kills and a block. Setter Elle Glock had 32 assists and two kills in the match, while libero Elena Scott recorded 15 digs and five assists.
Last Sunday, Louisville swept No. 13 Penn State on Sunday afternoon, and never trailed in the match. Outside hitter Anna DeBeer led the charge offensively with 10 kills, with outside hitter Charitie Luper right behind her, adding nine kills. Opposite hitter Aiko Jones recorded eight kills and two blocks, middle blocker Phekran Kong tallied seven kills and four blocks, and middle blocker Cara Cresse had six kills and three blocks while adding three service aces.
Cresse's .549 hitting percentage is first in the ACC and in the nation, while her 1.38 blocks per set puts her second in the ACC in that category. Setter Brigitta Petrenko's .80 aces per set puts her first in the ACC and second nationally, while DeBeer's 3.88 kills per set and 4.19 points per set are second and fourth in the ACC, respectively. Libero Elena Scott is third in the ACC in digs per set with 4.48, and setter Elle Glock is seventh in the conference in assists per set with 9.40.Â
In the ACC, Louisville as a team is first in aces per set, second in hitting percentage, third in blocks per set, fourth in kills per set, fourth in opponent hitting percentage, and fifth in assists per set thus far.
Stanford (6-2) is 0-1 all-time against Louisville. The two teams met last season at Maples Pavilion on the same date - a four-set win by the Cardinals. Stanford was led by Kendall Kipp and Caitie Baird, who had 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Libero Elena Oglivie had a team-best 16 digs. The Cardinal dropped a four-set match to No. 4 Nebraska on Tuesday at Maples Pavilion. It was the Cardinal's first loss to the Huskers since 2008, snapping a five-match winning streak over Nebraska. Stanford was held to a season-low hitting percentage (.218) and was out dug and out blocked by the Huskers. Caitie Baird led the Cardinal with 15 kills on .400 hitting, six digs, three assists, two blocks and an ace. SU was picked to repeat as Pac-12 champions by a vote of the league's coaches. The Cardinal led the conference with six selections to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team - outside hitter Caitie Baird, middle blocker Sami Francis, opposite Kendall Kipp, setter Kami Miner, libero Elena Oglivie and outside hitter Elia Rubin.
