Cards Open ACC Play Against No. 20 Virginia
September 14, 2023 | Women's Soccer
It is Virginia’s first trip to Louisville since 2018
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team is back at home this weekend and set to open ACC play against a ranked foe. The Cardinals welcome No. 20 Virginia to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Saturday, September 16. The Cardinals and Cavaliers will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Saturday's match will be the fifth home game for the Cardinals in their last six games. In the previous four home games, the Cardinals have pitched two clean sheets and have scored six goals. Freshman Molly Cochran recorded a brace in the 3-0 win over Central Michigan during the home stretch, the first freshman to have a brace since 2021. Sophomore Addie Chester has tied for the team lead in goals as she has scored against Central Michigan and in their last game against Wyoming.
The Cardinals have had strong defense at home this season. In their five home games, the Cards have recorded three clean sheets and allowed just four goals. In the opener against Indiana State, Louisville did not allow a shot in a game for the first time since the 2019 season. The Cards have allowed five shots or less in three of their five home games.
The Cavaliers are making their first trip to Louisville since the 2018 season. Since the Cavaliers last trip, the Cardinals have traveled to Charlottesville five times and they have met once at the ACC Tournament. Virginia is ranked No. 20 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches rankings and it will be the first ranked opponent the Cardinals will face this season. It will not be the last ranked opponent this season either as the Cards are set to face four more ranked opponents based on this week's poll.
Following Saturday's matchup against the Cavaliers, the Cardinals will conclude their three-game homestand on Thursday, September 21. The Cardinals will welcome the Pitt Panthers to Lynn Stadium for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff and the game will be aired nationally on the ACC Network.
