Lucy Roberts scored her first goal with the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team picked up its first ever point in program history against Virginia after the Cardinals fought the Cavaliers to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Lucy Roberts put the Cardinals up in the 58th minute until Virginia found the equalizer in the 80th minute and the game finished at 1-1.
Roberts scored her first goal with the Cardinals and the seventh of her career after playing four years at South Florida before coming to Louisville for her final season. It was just the third goal allowed by the Cavaliers this season. Fiona Gaißer tallied her second assist of the year on Roberts goal and Addie Chester collected her team-leading third assist of the season. Erynn Floyd was solid in net for the Cards as she finished with four saves and kept Virginia from ever taking the lead in the match.
It was a quiet half for both teams as most of the possession was played in the midfield area.
Virginia had a great opportunity in the 25th minute as Maggie Cagle played a cross across the box and past the far post. Allie Ross settled the ball for the Cavaliers and fired a low shot on goal but Erynn Floyd was on the spot and deflected it out of play.
The Cardinals best opportunity of the half came in the final seconds as the first half was winding down. Louisville got a corner kick and Emma Kate Schroll took it quickly into the box with under 10 seconds left in the half. Karsyn Cherry was able to get the ball and one-timed her chance on frame but the Cavaliers were able to come up with the save as the clock hit zero in the first half.
In the second half, the Cardinals opened the scoring in the 58th minute off of a set piece. Chester played a ball into the box that was deflected by Gaißer over to Roberts. Roberts was behind the Cavalier back line and she tucked the ball past the keeper for the game's opening goal.
The Cardinals looked to double their lead in the 69th minute as Mackenzie Geigle forced a turnover and played a ball up to Chester. Chester beat out the two Virginia defenders and put a shot on frame that was saved by the Cavaliers keeper.
Virginia got the equalizer in the 80th minute after Cagle fed a ball to Meredith McDermott in the middle of the box. McDermott one-timed it and it snuck inside the right post for the tying score.
Each team had a couple shots to regain the lead in the final 10 minutes but none of them ended up on frame and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Cardinals will stay at home as they finished their three-game homestand on Thursday night with another ACC opponent. The Cardinals welcome the Pitt Panthers to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Thursday, September 21. The Cardinals and Panthers will square off at 8 p.m. ET and it will be aired nationally on the ACC Network.
