Cards tied a season high in goals against the Panthers
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team's offense was on full display in its 3-2 win over Pitt Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The three goals tied a season high as the Cardinals extended their unbeaten streak to three games. The Cardinals handed the Panthers just their second loss of the season as they entered the match with an 8-1-0 record.
The Cardinals three goals came from three separate players as Emma Hiscock opened the scoring in the first half. It was her first goal of the season and her first goal since the 2021 season after she missed the entire 2022 season. Emerson Jennings scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Mackenzie Geigle put the game out of reach with her first career goal in the second half. Hayley Howard set a career high with two assists and Hiscock set a career high with three points. Erynn Floyd tallied six saves in the win, her fourth-straight game with four or more saves.
The first half began with a lot of possession in the midfield from both teams as they settled into the match. Through the first 30 minutes, there were only six shots combined and only two were on frame.
That changed in the 35th minute when the Cardinals opened the scoring for the match. Hayley Howard played a ball up to Fiona Gaißer just outside the box and she one-timed it back for Hiscock. She settled the ball to her left foot and fired a shot outside the box that curled past the keeper and inside the left post for the goal.
In the second half, the Cardinals doubled their lead in the 58th minute. Addie Chester worked through a couple of Pitt defenders in the box and lofted a cross towards the far post. Jennings came streaking in behind the last Pitt defender and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to put the Cards up 2-0.
Pitt cut into the Louisville lead with a goal off of a penalty kick in the 64th minute but the Cardinals responded less than one minute later.
Coming off the restart of play, the ball got out to the left side with Howard and she played a through ball up to Hiscock. After a couple of touches, she sent a cross into the box and Geigle was coming into the box from the right side. She was first to the ball and used her left foot to volley the cross past the Pitt keeper for the third goal of the match.
Pitt would add another goal in the 84th minute but the Panthers could not get the equalizer and the Cards came away with the 3-2 win.
The Cards will head out on the road for just the fourth time all season and the first time in ACC play to close out the week. The Cards are heading to Miami to take on the Hurricanes Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals and Hurricanes will square off at 12 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
