Cardinals and Norse Finish in Scoreless Draw
August 27, 2023 | Women's Soccer
The Cardinals have yet to concede a goal in either of their home games this season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team had another hard fought defensive battle Sunday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium against Northern Kentucky. The Cardinals held the edge in shots, 21-4, but were unable to get a goal and the game finished in scoreless draw. The Cardinals have yet to concede a goal through their first two home matches this season.
In the first half, neither team was able to breakthrough on the scoresheet. The Cardinals held a 9-1 advantage on shots and had five make frame.
In the 36th minute, Savina Zamborini had a great ball played to her from Emma Kate Schroll and she was through the Norse defense. The Northern Kentucky goalkeeper came off her line and was able to block Zamborini's first shot and on the rebound, she fired it just wide of the post.
In the second half, the Cardinals had a great opportunity in the 47th minute. Mackenzie Geigle intercepted a Norse pass and played Maya Maxwell into the box where she was 1-v-1 with the keeper. Maxwell fired a low shot with pace but the Norse keeper was able to dive and push the shot away.
In the 68th minute, Northern Kentucky had their best offensive opportunity of the match. Emma McSwigan put a shot on goal that Erynn Floyd saved and it deflected up and off the bar. The Norse got to the rebound and got another shot on frame but Floyd pushed it away to end the threat.
In the closing minute, the Cardinals got a corner kick and Addie Chester sent it beyond the far post where Karsyn Cherry got around her defender. She got the cross on the fly with her right foot but just pushed it wide of the net.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday for the second of their three-straight games at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals welcome Illinois to town on Thursday night and the game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and it is free admission for fans at all home games during the regular season.
