Cardinals Defeated in 12 Innings by No. 3 Vanderbilt

Louisville took a 12-8 loss in extra innings on Tuesday night.
Tuesday night was the first extra-inning game of the season for Louisville (29-15), which has now lost four consecutive games.
The Cardinals and Commodores went back-and-forth throughout the night with each team erasing leads.
Louisville jumped on the board first on a two-run double from Gavin Kilen in the second inning, but Vanderbilt answered back with a two-run homer in the third. The Cardinals responded with another big two-run knock, this time from Jack Payton, who saw 12 pitches before dropping a single into left-centerfield.
Vanderbilt (35-13) plated two runs again in the fifth to tie the game at four, but Louisville responded in the bottom half.
JT Benson singled home Christian Knapczyk to give the Cards the lead back and Payton added on with a two-run opposite-field homer, his 11th of the season.
The Commodores plated a run in the seventh and then tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning. Vanderbilt then took its first lead of the night in the ninth on a solo homer.
Louisville didn't go quietly though, as Logan Beard singled leading off the bottom half of the ninth before pinch-runner Haven Mangrum swiped second base. Isaac Humphrey then tied the game with a double into right-center to knot it at eight.
The Cardinals had a runner in scoring position with the score tied in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings but were unable to get the runner home.
Greg Farone put the Commodores down quietly in the 10th, but they threatened in the 11th after a leadoff single and a hit by pitch. Cameron Robinson entered with the two runners on and no outs and proceeded to get a strikeout and double play to keep the game tied.
Vanderbilt finally broke through in the 12th, plating four runs to secure the win.
Payton was 2-for-5 on the night with four RBIs in his first game back after missing the previous four.
Tate Kuehner pitched two scoreless innings in a start on Tuesday. Twelve different pitchers took the mound on the night.
Louisville heads to Charlottesville for three games at No. 10 Virginia this weekend. The series gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
