Cardinals Lose Opening Game at No. 10 Virginia

Louisville suffered a 15-5 loss on Friday night in Charlottesville.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Louisville baseball team took a 15-5 loss in the series opener at No. 10 Virginia on Friday night.
Louisville (29-20, 9-16 ACC) has now lost five consecutive games.
After giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, Christian Knapczyk handled a tough hop up the middle and started a double play. However, the Cavaliers followed with two walks and a three-run home run to grab an early lead.
Two innings later, Virginia (39-11, 14-11) left the yard again, this time a two-run shot that stretch the margin out to 5-0. The Cavaliers then blew the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs with two outs.
Louisville finally got on the board in the seventh, stringing together five singles to push two runs home. Isaac Humphrey beat out an infield single to plate the first run and Haven Mangrum added a second with a single into left.
Mangrum added a run-scoring double in the ninth to be the lone Cardinal with multiple hits in the game. Ryan McCoy drove home two with a single in the ninth to up his team-leading RBI total to 42.
Ryan Hawks (5-3) allowed five runs over four innings of work in the start.
Louisville and Virginia will meet again on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. Saturday's contest will be televised on ACC Network.
