Six Louisville pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout on Tuesday.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 19th-ranked University of Louisville baseball team used six different pitchers to put together a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 win at No. 10 Kentucky on Tuesday night in Lexington.
Louisville (27-13) snapped a four-game skid with the victory, its third shutout of the season.
Evan Webster (2-2) took the ball first for the Cardinals, pitching a pair of scoreless frames to get the night started. Kade Grundy and Kaleb Corbett each followed with two zeros over their own.
Patrick Forbes faced the minimum in a scoreless seventh, while Kayden Campbell handled the eighth and Tate Kuehner pitched a perfect ninth.
Meanwhile, the offense was held at bay for the first six innings. Jack Payton's solo home run leading off the second inning was the only run of the game heading into the seventh.
The Louisville bats finally broke through though. Isaac Humphrey doubled the lead with the Cardinals' third consecutive single to start the frame. A passed ball allowed Logan Beard to score and Payton dumped a single into right-center to bring Humphrey home to make it a 4-0 contest.
One inning later, Gavin Kilen lined a double to the left-centerfield wall with a pair in scoring position to add two more to the lead and Tyeler Hawkins put the cherry on top with a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth.
The bottom third of Louisville's batting order combined to do damage on Tuesday night with Brandon Anderson, Beard and Humphrey combining to go 7-for-12 with five runs scored. Payton added a pair of hits including his ninth home run of the year.
Louisville now returns home to take on Miami. The series gets underway on Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
