Cards Suffer Third Straight One-Run Loss
April 23, 2023 | Baseball
Louisville lost 4-3 on Sunday at Duke.
DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked University of Louisville baseball team closed out the weekend series at Duke with a 4-3 loss on Sunday.
Louisville (26-13, 8-10 ACC) took a one-run loss for the third consecutive contest.
The Cardinals held a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning on Sunday before allowing three runs in the bottom half of the frame in the loss.
Duke (27-12, 12-8) took an early lead on Sunday with a solo home run in the second inning. However, that was all the Blue Devils would get off Carson Liggett.
The Cardinals tied the game in the fourth on a run-scoring double off the bat of Jack Payton. Isaac Humphrey then gave them the lead one inning later with a RBI knock of his own.
The score remained 2-1 until the eighth when Louisville doubled its lead. Will Cook singled and was pinch run for by Tyeler Hawkins. Hawkins proceeded to swipe second and move to third on a throwing error before scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
The lead didn't stand up though, as Duke took advantage of three free passes in its half of the eighth mixed in with two singles to take the lead and ultimately the game.
Liggett was outstanding once again for the Cardinals. The right-hander allowed just the one run on four hits over 6.1 innings, but received a no-decision. The sophomore has allowed two earned runs or less in all 10 of his starts this season.
Louisville finishes up a five-game road swing on Tuesday with a trip to take on Kentucky in Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
