Louisville Secures Opening ACC Series with Sunday Win

The Cardinals defeated Georgia Tech 9-3 at Jim Patterson Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The second-ranked University of Louisville baseball team downed Georgia Tech 9-3 in the final game of the weekend Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (17-2, 2-1 ACC) clinched the series with the win, improving to 21-8-1 all-time in rubber games of ACC weekends.
The Cardinals jumped out early with a run in each of the first two weekends. JT Benson doubled home Christian Knapczyk in the first and Logan Beard brought Eddie King Jr. in with a sacrifice fly in the second.
Georgia Tech (14-6, 3-3) answered back though, pushing three runs across in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
However, Louisville had the immediate response, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead back and seven unanswered overall.
Beard drove in King once again to tie the game and Gavin Kilen put the Cards in front with a run-scoring single to center.
Will Vierling doubled the margin with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and Beard launched a solo home run in the sixth to make it a 6-3 contest.
The Cards then tacked on three more runs in the eighth to extend the lead and put the game away. Jack Payton drove in a run with his third hit of the day before wild pitches allowed two more runs to score.
Carson Liggett (4-0) was the beneficiary of the offense on Sunday, limiting Georgia Tech to just three runs over six innings for his fourth win. Tucker Biven and Tate Kuehner combined for the final nine outs, with Kuehner earning his second save.
Payton recorded his second three-hit game of the weekend to lead the Cards, including a career-high three stolen bases. Benson, Beard and Kilen all tallied multiple hits as well, while Knapczyk also set a career high with three steals.
Overall, the Cardinals tallied eight stolen bases on the day, the most since swiping eight against Murray State on March 19, 2021.
Louisville closes out its nine-game homestand on Tuesday with Western Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
