Dobson Records Hat Trick in Loss at No. 12 Virginia
February 25, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
Kylea Dobson led the way with a season-high three goals.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Kylea Dobson scored a season-high three goals as the No. 23 University of Louisville lacrosse program and fell 19-9 to No. 12 Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools.
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Cavaliers improve to 4-0, 1-0 in league play.
"I thought we got off to a great start." said head coach Scott Teeter. "Even though we had a lead, the lead could've been bigger. Give the credit to Virginia for not quitting and battling back and making it a game for the second half. The second half, we played defense quite a bit. We struggled with clearing the ball and our defense got extremely tired. We have to rest up, learn from this and get ready for a tough game against Vanderbilt on Monday."
The Cardinals scored 35 seconds into the game on the first possession with a goal from Kylea Dobson and an assist from Tiffany Natoli. Dobson scored a second goal at 10:39 off of a rebound from a shot from Kokoro Nakazawa. Virginia got on the board with a free position goal from McGovern, but the Cards answered on the next possession with a goal of their own from Negai Nakazawa. Hannah Morris got in the scoring mix on an assist from Kokoro Nakazawa to give the Cards the 4-1 lead. A goal from Rachel Clark brought the Cavaliers within two.
Dobson earned her first hat trick of the season with a free position goal less than two minutes into the second quarter. The Cavaliers scored three straight goals to tie the score 5-5. Nicole Perroni knocked in a goal with five minutes left in the first half to regain the lead. With 38 second left, McGovern scored for the second time to tie the game 6-6 heading into the locker room.
The Cavaliers scored four straight goals to start the second half before the Cards answered with back-to-back goals from the elder Nakazawa and Morris. A goal from Clark in the final two minutes gave Virginia the 11-8 lead to end the third quarter.
To start the fourth quarter, three straight goals gave the Cavaliers the five point lead. Alexa Steffens notched her first goal of the season on a free-position attempt with less than nine minutes left of the game. Five more goals from Virginia pushed the lead to 19-9.
The Cardinals were three for three on free position shots and tied their season low turnovers with 12. Virginia was three for six on free position shots and recorded 15 turnovers.
Louisville won the draw control in the first half 8-6, but loss the draw control for the game.
Next up, Louisville heads to Tennessee to take on RV Vanderbilt on Monday at 2 p.m. ET.
