Louisville rolled to a 7-1 victory over Bucknell in the first game of the season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team turned in a 7-1 victory over Bucknell Friday in the opening day of the 2023 season at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Ryan Hawks (1-0) turned in a dominant performance on Friday in just his second start of his career. The right-hander struck out a career-high nine in 6.1 innings with his only run allowed coming after he exited the game in the seventh.
Hawks' 6.1 innings marked the longest Opening Day start by a Louisville pitcher since Kyle Funkhouser worked seven innings against Alabama State in the first game of 2015.
The Louisville offense provided all the help Hawks would need in the third inning. Christian Knapczyk led off the frame with a perfect bunt single down the third base line and Isaac Humphrey launched the first of three UofL long balls to open the scoring.
Two batters later, Ryan McCoy singled and Eddie King Jr. followed with his first collegiate hit, sending a triple into the left-centerfield gap that scored McCoy from first. Brandon Anderson tacked on another run with a groundout and the Cards led 4-0 three innings in.
Bucknell plated its lone run of the game in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals immediately responded.
After a Jack Payton single, McCoy recorded his first home run in a Louisville uniform, launching a ball 428 feet down the right field line. One inning later, Tyeler Hawkins added the final run of the day with a solo shot in the eighth.
McCoy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in his Louisville debut. King and Knapczyk each tallied a pair of hits and scored a run.
Evan Webster and Alex Galvan each turned in scoreless outings out of the bullpen, with Webster striking out the side in the eighth.
Louisville and Bucknell will play the middle game of the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
