Louisville’s Run in ACC Championship Ends in Semifinals
November 08, 2023 | Men's Soccer
The Cardinals lost in the semifinal round on Wednesday night at Clemson.
CLEMSON, S.C. – Following a pair of dramatic wins, the quest for an ACC Championship came to an end for the 20th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team on Wednesday night in a 5-1 defeat at No. 14 Clemson.
Louisville (11-5-3) will now await its NCAA Tournament draw. The NCAA selection show will take place at 1 p.m. ET on Monday.
Clemson (10-3-4) got off to a quick start on Wednesday, netting the opening goal of the match in the seventh minute.
However, the Cardinals responded 12 minutes later. David Boccuzzo forced a turnover in the attacking third and Parker Forbes' cross found the head of a streaking Gage Guerra and ended up in the back of the net to level the match at one.
The goal was the seventh of the season for the junior forward and his first since Sept. 8 at Syracuse. Guerra is second on the team with seven goals this season, despite missing eight matches due to injury.
The match remained tied at one for the next 12 minutes behind Alex Svetanoff's work in goal. During the 12-minute stretch, the redshirt-freshman keeper made seven saves to thwart the Tigers' attack.
Clemson's attack proved to be too much though, as the Tigers grabbed the lead back in the 31st minute and then doubled their advantage in the 36th minute.
The match went to halftime at 3-1, with Svetanoff denying a penalty kick opportunity in the closing minutes of the first half to keep it at just a two-goal deficit.
It was more of the same in the second half though, with the Tigers tacking on insurance goals in the 68th and 71st minutes to secure their spot in Sunday's ACC Championship match.
Svetanoff set a new career-high on Wednesday, totaling 11 saves in the loss.
