Boccuzzo's Goal Lifts Louisville Over NC State
September 30, 2022 | Men's Soccer
The freshman scored the first goal of his career.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The 15th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to five matches, tallying a 1-0 victory at NC State on Friday afternoon.
Â
Driving wind and rain affected the match throughout, helping keep the match scoreless until the 59th minute when David Boccuzzo headed the ball into the back of the net for the only goal of the afternoon.Â
Â
Louisville (6-2-2, 2-1-1 ACC) nearly took another early lead, as Konstantinos Georgallides' shot rang off the crossbar in the second minute. Opportunities for both teams were at a premium for the remainder of the first half, as neither team fielded a shot on goal in the first half.
Â
Early in the second half, Patrick Ajdukiewicz lofted the ball across the field to Sander Roed, who fired a centering pass from the right side of the box, allowing Boccuzzo to knock it inside the right post.
Â
The goal was the first of Boccuzzo's collegiate career and marked the seventh consecutive match where Louisville struck first. The helper from Roed was his fifth on the season, which leads the Cardinals.
Â
After a 10-minute rain delay to remove standing water from the playing surface, NC State (3-4-1, 1-3-0) earned four corner kicks over a two-minute span but could not even the score.Â
Â
Louisville nearly extended the lead on two occasions in the 78th minute, when Nico Diaz sent a shot off the crossbar and Roed's shot on the rebound was saved by the Wolfpack keeper.
Â
Ryan Troutman earned his second shutout of the season in goal and the fifth of his career, tallying one save.
Â
Louisville held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Â
The Cardinals will take a week of rest before heading to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Oct. 8. The match will be Louisville's second consecutive road conference match and is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m ET.
