Louisville posts its third-straight shutout in the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team (4-1-2, 1-0-0) opened ACC play with a 1-0 win over Miami (3-2-2, 0-1-1) Saturday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Graduate student Maisie Whitsett broke the deadlock in the second half and the Cardinals secured their third-straight shutout in the win. With the win, the Cardinals have won four of their last five ACC openers dating back to 2018.
In the first half, the Cardinals had two quality chances with the first coming in the 18th minute. The Cards earned a corner and Addie Chester sent a lofted ball towards the far post. Karsyn Cherry rose above the Hurricanes defense and sent a driven header towards goal but it went just above the bar and out of play.
Later in the 32nd minute, Anouk Denton had space down the left side and brought it all the way into the attacking third from the back line. She sent a low pass towards the top of the box where Whitsett was making a run in. She dummied the pass and allowed it to go through to Mackenzie Geigle. Geigle wasted no time and sent a low shot that was just wide of the near post.
The score stayed deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the half. The Cardinals held a 7-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Cards nearly got on the scoreboard off a free kick. The free kick was just outside the box and Chester lined up to take it. Her attempt got over the wall and deflected off the bar down on the goal line and back into play. At the next stoppage, the play was reviewed to see if the ball crossed the line but the call on the field was confirmed.
The Cardinals broke through in the 62nd minute for the first goal of the match. Savina Zamborini put a cross into the box that was deflected by a couple Hurricanes defenders and the ball was free just outside the six-yard box. Whitsett got her foot on it first and tucked it inside the right post for the goal. The goal was Whitsett's third of the season to tie the team-high and gave the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Lizzie Sexton almost doubled the lead in the 78th minute for the Cards. Chester took a corner that was flicked back to Sexton inside the six-yard box. Her shot was saved by a Miami defender off the goal line.
The Cardinals defense was stout all night long and just allowed one shot in the second half to secure the win. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas made her first career start in goal and collected her first career shutout. She made two saves on the night with both coming in the first half.
It was the third-straight shutout for the Cards and the fifth total shutout this season as they have allowed just four goals through seven games.
The Cardinals will be back in action next week to begin a three-game road swing starting on Thursday, September 22. The Cards will travel to Tallahassee to take on the 12th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. Thursday's match is set for a 7 p.m. ET start and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
