Cardinals Hit the Road to Take on #23 Memphis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team is back on the road as they head to Harrisonburg, Va. for a two-game road swing this week. The Cardinals first game of the trip will be Thursday, September 1, as they take on No. 23 Memphis. The two teams will square off from Sentara Park at 7 p.m. ET but there will be no live video of the match.
The Cardinals are coming off a 1-0 road win over intrastate-foe Northern Kentucky this past Sunday. Freshman defender Karsyn Cherry got on the scoresheet for the second time this season and she headed home a free kick from Maisie Whitsett. It was all the offense the Cardinals needed as they limited the Norse to just one shot on the night. It was the fewest shots allowed by the Cardinals since August 25, 2019, when they did not allow a single shot in the 3-0 win over Morehead State.
Cherry has tied Whitsett with a team-high two goals on the year and Whitsett leads the team with six points as she collected at least one point in each of the three games this season. With the win over the Norse, freshman Erynn Floyd notched her second clean sheet of the season.
The newcomers continue to contribute for the Cardinals early on in the 2022 season. Five different freshmen have earned starts so far this season and six total newcomers have been in the Starting XI. Freshmen Addie Chester, Lizzie Sexton, Cherry and transfer Patricia Ward have started in all three games for the Cardinals. Cherry and transfer Autumn Weeks have both scored so far this season and Floyd has been in goal for 90 minutes in all three games this year.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
Memphis finished the 2022 season with a 14-5-2 record and went 5-3 in American play. The Tigers won the American Conference Tournament to earn a berth into the 2021 NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the second round before they fell to Duke 1-0 in Durham. So far this season, Memphis is 3-1-0 with wins over Arkansas Little Rock, Iowa State and UAB. Sophomore midfielder Anne-Valerie Seto leads the Tigers with three goals and six points on the year while fellow sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Alonzo leads the team with three assists. The Tigers have split time in net and Sarah Bozeman leads the way with a 2-0 record with four saves and just one goal allowed.
SERIES HISTORY
Memphis holds a 7-4-1 all-time series advantage between the two schools. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since they were conference foes in the American Athletic Conference back in 2013. Memphis defeated the Cardinals, 2-1, in 2OT in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
