Cardinals Set to Host Musketeers on Thursday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following their season-opening win over UIC, the Louisville women's soccer team is set to finish their brief two-game homestand with a matchup against Xavier Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals and Musketeers are set to face off at 7:30 p.m. ET and the contest will air on the ACC Network Extra. It will be the second game of a doubleheader at Lynn Stadium as the men's team opens their season at 5 p.m. ET against Saint Louis.
All women's soccer matches will have free admission during the 2022 season. Thursday's match will be a part of Noche de Familia y Amigos as the Cardinals partner with the Cultural Center to celebrate the Latinx community with a halftime celebration on the pitch.
In the win over UIC the Cardinals scored all three goals in the first half, including two in the opening 10 minutes, to push by the Flames. Freshman Karsyn Cherry netted her first career goal in her first collegiate game in the seventh minute to open the scoring. It was the second-fastest goal by a freshman in a season-opener amongst ACC teams. The team's leading career goal scorer, Maisie Whitsett, doubled the lead in the ninth minute as she scored her first goal of the season and 16th of her career. Transfer Autumn Weeks added her first goal as a Cardinal and sixth of her career to cap the scoring on the night in the 36th minute.
With the win, Louisville improved to 20-1-2 in season-openers under head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes and are 9-0 in home openers at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. It was the 12th-straight victory for the Cardinals in the month of August, a streak that dates back to the 2017 season. The Cardinals are 39-9-5 all-time in the month of August during Ferguson-Dayes' tenure. The win also gave the Cards their sixth-straight season-opening win, a streak that dates back to the 2016 season.

Xavier finished the 2021 season with a 16-3-1 overall record and 9-1-0 in BIG EAST play. The Musketeers won the BIG EAST regular season title and fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament after a 1-0 defeat to UW-Milwaukee. As a team, the Musketeers registered 31 goals and 50 saves through 20 games. The Musketeers' attack is led by sophomore forward Chloe Netzel, who scored a team-high six goals in her freshman campaign. Junior midfielder Elise Le led the team with four assists.
