
Albiero and Comerford Help USA To Win in Duel in the Pool

Team USA has never lost a Duel
Junior Gabi Albiero and University of Louisville alumnus Mallory Comerford competed in the three-day Duel in the Pool competition over the weekend along with 28 other swimmers from the United States.
The United States finished on top, securing a 26 point victory over Australia at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The United States has never lost a Duel in the Pool competition.

Both Cardinals began their weekend on day two of competition with a mixed 400 medley relay, finishing behind Australia. The relay teams included two males and two females in which Albiero swam the butterfly leg and Comerford finished with freestyle leg of the relay.

Albiero also swam in a 50 meter butterfly skins event, finishing third overall and receiving two points for team USA. The skins event consists of three Australian swimmers versus three American swimmers. The last two to finish in each leg drop out of the event until just two swimmers remain. The first two to drop out do not receive points. The second two to drop out receive two and one points respectively while the final two remaining are awarded four and three points.

Comerford placed fourth in her first individual event of the weekend, the 50 freestyle. She also swam in the 200 freestyle on Saturday, finishing in fifth place. Albiero and three other Americans finished on top of Australia in the mixed 200 random relay to close out day two of competition.

After day two, the United States held a narrow lead of 159 points to 148 points.

In the final day of the duel, Albiero swam in two events while Comerford swam in three events. Albiero placed third in the 50 freestyle skins and second in the 100 butterfly.

Comerford participated in the mixed 300 freestyle relay which included three swimmers per country (one male, two females) each racing the 50 freestyle twice. The United States finished second. Comerford finished fourth in both the 50 freestyle skins event and the 100 freestyle.

Team USA continued their undefeated streak with 309 points while Australia finished with 283.
