Cardinals Open the Season with UIC on Thursday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team officially begins the season this Thursday as they host UIC at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The season-opener will be aired on ACC Network Extra and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
Similar to last season, all women's soccer regular season home matches will be free admission at Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals are coming off a 2-0 win over Cincinnati in an exhibition game this past Friday. Graduate student Maisie Whitsett opened the scoring in the first half and freshman Karsyn Cherry added a second half goal against the Bearcats.
Louisville has 15 total newcomers to the squad in 2022 and a number of them saw action against Cincinnati. 10 total newcomers got on the field against the Bearcats and five were in the Starting XI.
The Cardinals are led by Karen Ferguson-Dayes in her 23rd year at the helm. She is the winningest coach in program history and is six wins shy of her 200th career win at Louisville. She holds a 194-175-39 overall record as the head coach of the Cardinals.
Under Ferguson-Dayes, Louisville is 19-1-2 in season openers and 15-6-1 in home openers. The Cardinals have won 17 of the last 18 season openers, including their last five. Louisville has won 10-straight home openers and is 8-0 in home openers at Lynn Stadium, which opened in 2014.
ABOUT THE FLAMES
UIC finished the 2021 season with a 2-13-2 overall record and 2-7-2 in Horizon League. As a team, the Flames registered nine goals and 90 saves through 17 games. The Flames' attack is led by redshirt-senior midfielder Megan Bowman, who scored four goals last season. Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montague led the team with two assists and redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Keiser returns with nine saves and a 0.818 save percentage.
Series History - This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
