Cards score in each half
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Graduate Student Maisie Whitsett and freshman Karsyn Cherry scored as University of Louisville women's soccer defeated Cincinnati 2-0 in an exhibition on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals maintained much of the possession in the opening half and had a number of high-leverage opportunities, leading the Bearcats 5-1 in shots.
The scoring opened up in the 24th minute as the Cardinals brought the ball into the attacking third. Freshman Addie Chester got a shot on frame and was saved by the Bearcats keeper and deflected back into play. Whitsett collected the ball just outside the box and fired a quick ball on frame that beat the keeper for the game's opening goal.
The Cardinal back line did a great job in the first half keeping the Bearcats out of the attacking third. Cincinnati's lone shot of the half came from outside the box and it was deflected before it made it into the box.
In the second half, the Cardinals added to their lead in the 52nd minute. Chester had a corner and she lofted it past the far post to Patricia Ward. Ward headed the ball back towards the middle of the box where Karsyn Cherry was first to the ball and slotted it into the back of the net for the goal.
The defense kept up its stellar play in the second half and did not allow a single shot over the final 45 minutes. The Bearcats were held to just one shot total on the night.
The time in net was split between Erynn Floyd in the first half and Alyssa Zalac in the second half and neither of them faced a shot on net.
With the final exhibition in the books, Louisville opens the regular season at Lynn Stadium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET against UIC. The match will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.
