April 08, 2022 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville defeated North Carolina 9-4 in the teams' ACC series opener Friday evening at Ulmer Stadium. Saturday's game time has been moved to 3 p.m. due to rain and cold temperatures in the forecast.
Â
Taylor Roby struck out four in a complete game effort to get the win in the circle. The redshirt senior helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate which included a two-run home run and a double. Graduate senior catcher Kendall Smith went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs to help lead the Cardinals at the plate. Seven of Louisville's nine hits fell in for extra bases with home runs by Roby and Smith and doubles from Roby, Carmyn Greenwood, Dylann Cravens, Korbe Otis and Vanessa Miller.
Â
North Carolina (19-19, 4-9 ACC) jumped to an early lead with an unearned run in the first.
Â
The Cardinals (20-15, 4-6) quickly answered in the home half of the inning when Carmyn Greenwood drew a leadoff walk and Roby followed with a towering shot over the left field fence for her team-best 13th homer of the season.
Â
Louisville used three hits to put up a four-spot in the second. Miller led off the home half of the inning with a double and came home on Ally Alexander's RBI single. Jenna Servi earned a walk and Alexander stole third to set up Greenwood's two-run double. Smith's sacrifice fly would plate Greenwood to extend the lead to 6-1
Â
The Tar Heels countered with two runs in the third behind Taylor Green's two-run double which made the score 6-3.
Â
The Cards got the runs back in the fourth after Roby delivered a two-out double and was lifted for pinch runner Sydney Bickel to set the table for Smith who hammered a shot over left field for her ninth homer of the season.
Â
Once again, North Carolina responded, this time with an RBI double by Sara Jubas, bringing the score to 8-4.
Â
Louisville's offense continued in the fifth when Cravens led off with a double and eventually scored on a groundout by Miller.
