RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team staged a late-inning rally that included three home runs, but the Cards could not overcome a nine run deficit in a 10-6 loss at NC State Sunday's series finale.
Â
Louisville (19-15, 3-6 ACC) will return to action on Wednesday when the Cardinals welcome in-state rival Kentucky to Ulmer Stadium for an ESPNU televised game.
Â
Vanessa Miller went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs while Taylor Roby connected on a three-run homer to lead the Cards at the plate on the day.
Â
NC State (25-13, 5-10) jumped to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first behind a pair of two-out RBI singles by Taylor Johnson and Michele Tarpey. Johnson crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Â
The Cardinals countered in the top of the second when Vanessa Miller led off the frame with a shot over the left field wall for her third homer of the season.
Â
The Wolfpack got the run back in the home half of the second when Kaylee Lambrecht connected on a leadoff homer to push the lead back to three runs.
Â
NC State extended its lead to 10-1 with a six-spot in the bottom of the third, using four hits and an error.
Â
The Cardinals answered once again, this time with four runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half. Hannah File delivered a one-out triple and came home on an RBI single by Jenna Servi. Greenwood followed with a hit to set the table for Roby who lofted a shot down the left field line for her team-best 12th homer of the season.
Â
Louisville had a chance to score in the fifth when Dylann Cravens opened the frame with a hit and moved to third on Vanessa Miller's double to put two runners in scoring position to start the inning, but could not capitalize as NC State reliever Maddie MdPherson and the Wolfpack defense retired the next three batters. The Cards went on to strand eight baserunners in the game.
Â
Miller's second homer of the day, a solo shot that cleared the fence in left centerfield and landed on the adjacent soccer field made the score 10-6.
Â
Taja Felder entered the game to pitch in the fourth inning and held the Wolfpack scoreless on two hits while delivering three strikeouts to finish the game.
