Cardinals Drop Finale, Series at Pitt
April 03, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville lost 6-3 in the rubber game on Sunday.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team took a 6-3 loss in the series finale at Pitt on Sunday.
Louisville (21-7, 7-2 ACC) suffered its first weekend series loss of the season. The Cardinals wrap up their eight-game road trip on Tuesday with the Battle of the Bluegrass at Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
Pitt (15-11, 5-6) used four hits in the opening inning to plate a pair of runs and never trailed. The Panthers tacked on another in the second and led 3-0 through four.
The Cardinals had their first 13 batters retired in order on Sunday before a one-out single by Jack Payton in the fifth inning. Levi Usher followed with an infield single and Logan Beard broke up the shutout with a double down the left field line. Isaac Humphrey then lined a sacrifice fly to right to get the Cardinals within one.
That was all Louisville's offense would do though, as the Cardinals went in order each of the next three innings before Ben Metzinger hit an opposite field solo home run in the ninth.
Meanwhile, Pitt added a solo homer in the sixth and a two-run shot in the seventh to create some separation.
Riley Phillips (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing four runs over five innings.
