Louisville Suffers Heartbreaker to No. 18 Notre Dame on Senior Day

Caroline Blalock led the way for Louisville with five goals and an assist, along with five draws and two ground balls.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville lacrosse led by as much as five in the first half, but fell in a heartbreaker 15-14 against No. 18 Notre Dame on senior day at Cardinals Stadium.
With the loss, Louisville moves to 7-10 on the year, while Notre Dame improves to 8-8.
"We got off to a great start. The effort was definitely there," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Our girls left it all on the field and I couldn't be prouder."

Trailing 2-1 early in the first quarter, Louisville rattled off six consecutive goals, two from Hannah Morris, two from Caroline Blalock and one from Nicole Perroni and Paige Richbourg, to build a 7-2 lead just a minute into the second quarter.

The Cardinals led 9-4 with 7:31 to go in the first half, but the Fighting Irish closed the first stanza by scoring four of the final five goals to trim Louisville's lead to 10-8 at halftime.

Notre Dame scored the first goal of the second half, but the Cardinals responded with goals from Blalock and Morris to extend their lead to 12-9.

But, the Fighting Irish responded again, this time with four straight goals to regain the lead at 13-12 with a minute to go in the third quarter. It marked Notre Dame's first lead since they led 2-1.

Twice in the final 10 minutes, it was Blalock that pulled the Cardinals even. First with a free position shot and then with 7:47 to go, she sent a beautiful shot from the right side of the net past the Notre Dame goalie to even the score at 14-14.

Both teams had several chances in the waning minutes, but it was Notre Dame that broke the tie on a breakaway goal by Maddie Howe with 2:39 to go.

The Cardinals failed to score on the next possession and the Fighting Irish regained possession with just a 20-second differential between the shot clock and game clock. The Irish then ran the shot clock down, giving Louisville possession with less than 20 seconds to go, but an errand pass ended any chance at a last second goal to tie the game.

J Pleck tied a season high with 10 saves and played all 60 minutes in net.

The Cardinals outshot Notre Dame 36-28 and had 30 shots on goal to the Irish's 25.

Louisville now turns its attention towards the ACC Tournament, which will take place in South Bend. Ind. They will square off against Pitt on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
