Cardinals Drop Finale 10-9 at Florida State
April 16, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville has lost three in a row for the first time this season.
Louisville (24-11, 9-6 ACC) got off to a fast start Saturday, picking up three runs on three hits in the opening frame.
Christian Knapczyk was hit by the first pitch of the game and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Ben Metzinger singled him home to start the scoring. Dalton Rushing then doubled off the wall in right-centerfield to score Metzinger and Jack Payton followed with a double of his own off the wall to make it a 3-0 game.
Florida State (22-13, 10-8) plated a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Cardinals got the run right back. Knapczyk led off the second with a walk and came around to score on Payton's second run-scoring hit in as many innings.
The Seminoles got back within one with a two-run homer in the second and then tied it in the fourth. However, on the single that tied the game in the fourth, Isaac Humphrey gunned down the potential go-ahead run to keep it a 4-4 contest.
After throwing the runner out at the plate in the fourth, Humphrey stepped to the plate in the fifth and put the Cardinals back in front with an opposite field RBI single.
FSU grabbed its first lead of the game in the fifth with a three-run homer giving the Seminoles a 7-5 edge. They then tacked on three more in the seventh to open up a five-run advantage.
The Cardinals wouldn't go quietly though. Metzinger hit a long two-run homer in the eighth, his 14th of the season. Logan Beard made it a one-run game later in the inning, singling home a pair of runs with two away.
Louisville threatened in the ninth, getting the tying and go-ahead runs on with only one out. Knapczyk reached on a bunt single and Metzinger followed with a knock of his own. However, back-to-back strikeouts left both runners on.
Metzinger, Payton and Beard all had three hits on the day, as the Cardinals tallied 14 in the loss.
Louisville returns home for eight straight starting with the Battle of the Bluegrass against Kentucky on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
