Cards Defeat North Carolina to Clinch Series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated North Carolina 5-2 on Sunday at Ulmer Stadium to clinch the ACC series. The Cardinals (21-16, 5-7 ACC) will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to in-state rival No. 8/12 Kentucky at 6 p.m.

Kendall Smith went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI while Korbe Otis went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and scored a run to help lead Louisville at the plate. Taylor Roby (11-5) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning while notching her second complete game win of the weekend and striking out six in the contest.

The teams played through two scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a pair of runs in the third. Jenna Servi got the home half of the inning started with a hit and Carmyn Greenwood followed with a bunt single. An RBI hit by Smith and another bunt single from Otis gave Louisville a 2-0 lead.

The Cards' offense continued in the third when Dylann Cravens delivered a leadoff hit, took second on Servi's sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on Greenwood's team-best sixth triple of the season to make the score 3-0.

The fifth inning brought two more Louisville runs. Smith led off with her second double of the game and Otis followed with a double of her own. Two outs later, Cravens singled Otis home to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Tar Heels (20-20, 5-10) got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning behind Taylor Greene's RBI double and Kianna Jones' RBI single which brought the score to 5-2.

Lilli Backes (6-13) took the loss after giving up five earned runs on 11 hits and striking out five in 5.0 innings of work.
