The Cardinals picked up its sixth straight victory on Tuesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team jumped out to a big lead and held on late for a 9-8 victory over No. 15 TCU on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (9-3) has now won six consecutive games and claimed its first ranked victory of the season.
The Cardinals appeared to be on cruise control Tuesday. Ben Bianco and Logan Beard each tallied run-scoring singles in the second, the first two of nine straight UofL runs.
Beard singled home another run in the fourth before the Cards put five on the board in the fifth. Dalton Rushing hit his fourth home run of the season leading off the inning and Ben Bianco made it a 5-0 game with his third triple of the year. Levi Usher drove in another with an infield single and then scored on a wild pitch before Cameron Masterman capped the inning with a RBI single to right.
Jared Poland (1-1) used the offense to his advantage, turning in the best start of his career. The right-hander allowed just two hits over six shutout innings and matched his career high with seven strikeouts.
Things got interesting after Poland left the game though, as TCU plated four runs in the seventh and then got within two at 9-7 and had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the eighth. A single through the right side scored one, but Isaac Humphrey cut down the tying run at the plate with a perfect throw from right field to end the inning.
Michael Prosecky then slammed the door shut in the ninth, striking out two of the four batters he faced in the inning for his third save of the season.
Jack Payton led the way offensively with a three-hit game, his third of the season. Bianco, Usher and Beard all tallied two hits of their own. The bottom five in the Louisville order finished the day 10-for-19 with nine runs scored.
Louisville now hosts Michigan for three games this weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET and is scheduled to be televised on ACC Network.
