Cardinals Defeat Michigan in Opener, Second Game Suspended

Louisville recorded a 5-3 victory in game one before the second game was suspended.
The second game of Friday's doubleheader was suspended after four innings with the Cardinals trailing 13-4. The game will resume on Sunday at noon ET with the final game of the series to follow.
Louisville (10-3) made it seven straight wins with the victory in Friday's opener. The win streak is the longest for the Cardinals since winning the last three of 2020 and first four of 2021.
Michigan (7-6) got on the board first with a solo home run in the second inning, but the Cards responded with four unanswered.
After a leadoff single from Logan Beard to start the third inning, Christian Knapczyk tripled to the wall in left-centerfield to tie the game at one. Two batters later, Cameron Masterman nearly left the yard to straightaway centerfield but the fly ball was caught in front of the wall for a sacrifice fly to gave Louisville a 2-1 lead.
Beard doubled home Levi Usher in the fourth inning to extend the lead and Usher tallied a run-scoring double of his own in the sixth to stretch the margin to three.
Michigan wouldn't go away quietly though, plating a pair of runs in the seventh to pull back within one.
Dalton Rushing immediately got one of the two runs back in the bottom half of the seventh, launching his fifth home run of the season and his third in the last four games.
The Louisville bullpen took care of business from there. Kaleb Corbett entered with two outs and the tying runs on base in the eighth and needed just one pitch to get a flyout to end the threat. Michael Prosecky then had the tying runs reach to start the ninth before slamming the door shut four his fourth save.
Usher and Beard led the way for the Cardinals, as the 8-9 hitters combined to go 5-for-8 in the victory.
Tate Kuehner (3-0) was excellent on the mound, allowing just two runs over six innings for his third consecutive win.
