Cards Drop Series Opener at No. 16/15 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 16/15 Clemson scored three runs in the sixth inning to beat the University of Louisville softball team 5-2 Friday evening in the opening game of an ACC series at McWhorter Stadium.

Louisville (17-11, 1-3 ACC) and Clemson (20-9, 2-5) will meet again on Saturday at 5 p.m. in an ACC Network televised game

Carmyn Greenwood went 2-for-3 with her eighth home run of the season and drove in both of Louisville's runs to pace the Cardinals at the plate. Chardonnay Harris (6-5) took the loss, allowing one two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout.

The teams played through three and a half scoreless innings before Clemson broke through with an unearned run in the fourth. Sam Russ walked, stole second and an error sent her home to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals answered in the top of the fifth when Dylann Cravens singled to set up Carmyn Greenwood's two-out two-run shot over the fence in left centerfield for her eighth homer of the season.

The Tigers used a hit and three walks to even the score at 2-2 in the home half of the fifth.

Clemson regained the lead with three runs in the sixth, capitalizing on three hits, a walk and an error to bring the final score to 5-2.

Millie Thompson (6-1) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out nine in a complete game effort. Cagle went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers offensively.
