Women's Swimming and Diving Finishes Sixth at NCAAs

ATLANTA -- The University of Louisville women finished sixth at the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.

Virginia defended its title from a year ago, boarding a score of 551.5. Texas was second with 406 followed by Stanford (399.5), Alabama (288), NC State (279), Louisville (196.5), Michigan (184.5), California (180), Ohio State 165) and Tennessee (127) to round out the top 10 in the 39-team field.

The Cardinals had two in the finals of the 200 backstroke.  Paige Hetrick was 12th with a time of 1:52.32 and Rye Ulett went 1:53.27 to finish 16th. In prelims, Tatiana Salcutan put up a 1:56.68. The event was won by Stanford's Regan Smith, who turned in a 1:47.76.

In the 100 freestyle, Gabi Albiero earned another All-American honor with a fifth-place finish, posting a time of 47.32 and dropping .13 from her prelim time. In prelims, Arina Openysheva finished 22nd overall with a time of 48.31 just ahead of Christiana Regenauer's 48.45. The event was won by Virginia's Gretchen Walsh's 46.05.

In the 200 breast, Morgan Friesen boarded a 2:09.16 to finish 27th, ahead of Mariia Astashkina, who put up a time of 2:09.79. The event was won by Virginia's Kate Douglass' 2:02.19.

In the 200 butterfly, Tristen Ulett finished 12th with a time of 1:54.63, dropping 1.18 seconds from her prelim time. Abby Hay was 14th with a 1:54.44 and Alena Kraus went 1:54.81 for 15th with all three earning honorable mention All-American Honors.

Diver Else Praasterink posted a score of 307.70 to finish 10th in the platform event.

Liberty Williams put up a time of 16:04.15 in the 1650 free to finish 13th and earn honorable mention All-American Honors. Â Wisconsin's Paige McKenna beat the field by five seconds with her time of 15:40.84.

The Cardinals dropped .20 from their entry time in the 400 free relay as Gabi Albiero (47.57), Christiana Regenauer (47.57), Tristen Ulett (48.00) and Arina Openysheva (47.55) put up a 3:10.69 to touch sixth and put up the second fastest time in school history. The event was won by Virginia's 3:06.91.
