Louisville Drops Overtime Heartbreaker at Colorado to Open Season
February 11, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Nicole Perroni and Hannah Morris combined for nine goals, but the Cardinals fell 14-13 at Colorado in overtime.
BOULDER, Colo. – Nicole Perroni and Hannah Morris combined for nine goals, but Louisville couldn't outlast Colorado in overtime, falling 14-13 in its season opener Friday night at Kittredge Field.
"I thought we battled, but am obviously disappointed in the outcome," said head coach Scott Teeter. "There are some things we need to work on and a lot of positives that we'll take out of this one and get ready to face a good Denver team on Sunday."
Â
The Cardinals struck first as Morris fired one past the Buffaloes' goaltender with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Colorado answered with two goals of its own, but UofL rallied and took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter after Perroni squeezed through the defense to score her first goal of the game.
Â
After coaches and officials decided to move the game inside from the snowy blizzard coming down in Boulder, both offenses dialed up the pressure and traded goals through the whole second quarter as the Buffaloes took a 7-6 lead into halftime.Â
Â
Louisville continued to play hard, but three straight goals from Colorado to end the third quarter gave the Cardinals quite the hill to climb heading into the final period of play.Â
Â
UofL came out ready to play in the fourth, ripping off three straight goals from Morris, Caroline Blalock and Perroni to tie the game 12-12 with 2:19 remaining. The Buffaloes answered, taking a 13-12 lead with 1:10 left in the game, but the Cardinals weren't ready to quit yet as Perroni netted her second goal of the quarter with 0:45 on the clock to tie the game at 13-13 and send it to overtime.
Â
Louisville's defense held strong in overtime, but Colorado pulled off the win, scoring a free-position goal with one second remaining.
Â
Perroni led the Cardinals with a career-high five goals and six draw controls, adding two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Morris contributed four goals, one draw control, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Caroline Blalock scored two goals, while Allegra Catalano and Kokoro Nakazawa each tallied one.
Â
Goalkeeper Sara Addeche finished the game with seven saves in her first start.
Â
Louisville is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET as they wrap up a two-game road trip at Denver.
