Â
Louisville 2 – FAU 0
Redshirt senior pitcher Taylor Roby scattered four hits and struck out two in a complete game shutout while graduate senior catcher Kendall Smith connected on an RBI double to help lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 win over host FAU in their season opener.
Â
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the teams played through three scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. Carmyn Greenwood reached on an error and moved into scoring position with her first stolen base of the season. Roby's flyout to deep right field sent Greenwood to third and Kendall Smith followed with a two-out RBI double to put Louisville on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cards added an insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of Rebecca Chung's RBI single. Freshman Korbe Otis got the inning's offense started with her first career hit and eventually crossed the plate when Chung delivered a pinch-hit single to left field, extending Louisville's lead to 2-0.
Â
The Owls (0-1) attempted to rally in the home half of the seventh when hits by Sara Berthiaume and Myah Murray each delivered singles, placing the tying run at first, but the Cardinals turned a double play, with Roby striking out Riley Ennis and Smith teaming with freshman shortstop Dylann Cravens to pick Berthiaume at second to end the game.
Â
In addition to getting the win in the circle, Roby (1-0) also delivered a hit while Smith was impressive behind the plate with a runner caught stealing and a pickoff.
Â
Lynn Gardner (0-1) took the loss after giving up four hits and striking out seven in a complete game effort. Berthiaume paced the Owls offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Â
Louisville 11 – FAU 7
In game two, Greenwood went 3-for-4 with a home run and tied a school record with a career-high four runs to help the Cardinals to an 11-7 victory. Roby also belted out a home run and drove in three RBIs. Chardonnay Harris (1-0) picked up the win in the circle while Holloway picked up her first save of the season.
Â
Louisville capitalized on two hits, three walks and an error to jump to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Graduate senior Hannah File's bases-loaded walk plated freshman Easton Lotus to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Otis connected on a two-run double and File would score on an error to increase the lead to 4-0. Junior third baseman Jenna Servi capped the first inning offense with an RBI single.
Â
FAU answered with a three-spot in the home half of the first inning behind Lynn Gardner's three-run homer to make the score 5-3.
Â
The bottom of the third inning brought another run for the Owls with Gardner's two-out RBI single. With runners on first and third, Harris delivered a strikeout to end the inning with Louisville holding a 5-4 lead.
Â
The Cardinals extended their lead with a run in the fourth. Greenwood got the frame started with a bunt single. Roby was hit by a pitch and Smith walked to load the bases for File's RBI fielder's choice.
The Owls countered once again with an unearned run in the fourth.
Â
Greenwood led off the sixth with a blast over the centerfield fence for her first home run of the season and second hit of the game.
Â
Louisville's offense continued when Greenwood delivered an RBI hit to plate freshman Dylann Cravens and Roby followed with a towering shot over centerfield to push Louisville's lead to 11-5 in the seventh.
Â
Once again, the Owls responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning and had runners on the corners when Holloway dealt a strikeout to end the game with the final score of 11-7.
Â
Donnie Gobourne (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs. Berthiaume went 4-for-4 and Gardner drove in four runs to lead FAU offensively.
