Cardinals Defeat Bethune-Cookman, Indiana at FAU First Pitch Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team picked up a pair of wins on day one of the FAU First Pitch Classic, defeating Bethune Cookman 14-0 and Indiana 9-5 Friday at FAU Softball Stadium.

The Cardinals (4-0) will wrap up the weekend on Saturday when they take on Ohio State at 9 a.m.

On the day, freshman Korbe Otis batted .667 (4-for-6) with two runs, while graduate transfer Hannah File batted .600 (3-for-5) with three runs, a double, a grand slam and drove in five RBIs. Taylor Roby connected on a double and two home runs while producing five RBIs and picked up the win against Indiana. Â

Louisville 14 – Bethune-Cookman 0
Seven of Louisville's nine hits in the game were for extra bases including home runs by Roby and Kendall Smith. Carmyn Greenwood and Maddy Grant each connected on a triple.

Sophomore Gabby Holloway picked up the win after surrendering only one hit and striking out five in 3.0 innings. Freshman Sam Booe was impressive in her collegiate debut, retiring all six batters she faced to combine for the one-hit shutout.

Louisville jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first when graduate senior Carmyn Greenwood's two-run triple highlighted an inning that also included two walk and three three errors.

The second inning brought another five -spot for Louisville. Greenwood earned a walk to set up Taylor Roby's second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence. With two outs in the inning, graduate senior Hannah File was hit by a pitch and freshman Korbe Otis singled, placing two on for freshman Maddi Grant who stepped up to the plate and drove her first collegiate hit to right field for a triple and an error on the play sent her home to make the score 10-0.

The Cardinals' offense rolled along in the third inning as freshman Easton Lotus led off with a hit and crossed the plate on Greenwood's double. Kendall Smith's two-run homer make the score 13-0.

Roby drove in the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when she doubled junior Jenna Servi home for the 14-0 final.

Greenwood helped pace the Cardinals, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, three runs and two RBIs. Roby drove in three runs while going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.

Louisville 9 – Indiana 5
In game two, Louisville used two home runs, including Roby's second of the day and Hannah File's fifth-inning grand slam, to break open a 3-3 tie with Indiana (0-1).

The Cardinals got off to a quick start with three runs in the top of the first. Freshman Easton Lotus delivered a leadoff single and moved to third on Greenwood's double. Lotus was safe at the plate when Roby reached on a fielder's choice. Greenwood crossed the plate on Kendall Smith's groundout and File's double sent pinch-runner Charley Butler home.

Indiana answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second to even the score at 3-3.

Roby led off the third with a towering shot over straight centerfield to put the Cards back on top 4-3.

The firepower continued in the fifth when Lotus doubled, Greenwood singled and Roby walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice saw Lotus out at the plate, File followed with her first home run as a Cardinal, extending the lead to 8-3.

After the Hoosiers added a run on an RBI single in the fifth, the Cardinals answered again when Greenwood crossed the plate on an error in the sixth. A two-out pinch-hit home run by Brittany Ford in the bottom of the seventh brought the final score to 9-5.

Roby (2-0) picked up the win, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits and striking out three in 5.0 innings. Chardonnay Harris surrendered one run and struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of relief. Five Cardinals recorded multiple hits in the game. File went 3-for 4 with five RBIs while Lotus went 3-for-4 with a double and a run to lead the way.

NOTES:
• This marks the Cardinals' first 4-0 start to the season since 2012 when Louisville put together a 28-0 game win streak to start the season.
• With her two home runs on the day, Roby now has 28 in her career and stands ninth on Louisville's all-time list. She needs one more to tie Alicja Wolny (2010-13) for eighth.
• Louisville improves its record to 19-3 in the all-time series against Indiana.
•  The Cardinals are now 2-0 in the series with Bethune-Cookman.
