Captain Sarah Hernandez scored her first goal of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team (5-5-2, 2-4-0) got back on track with a 1-0 win over Boston College (5-6-3, 1-5-0) Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Captain Sarah Hernandez tallied the game's lone goal in the 24th minute and it was the difference as the Cardinals picked up their sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams got off to a slow start as most of the play was in the midfield over the opening 20 minutes.
Boston College had the first quality chance of the half in the 19th minute but Erynn Floyd was able to make the save and corral the rebound before the Eagles could take advantage.
Moments later, the Cardinals connected on the offensive end to open the scoring. Savina Zamborini got the play started in midfield and played a ball up to Sarah Hernandez who was upfield coming off a Cardinal set piece. Hernandez played her way through the Eagles defense and made a nice touch past the keeper to slot home the goal. It was her first goal of the season and it gave the Cards a 1-0 lead.
That goal was the difference as the game reached halftime. Louisville held a slim 4-3 advantage in shots through the first half but Floyd was able to save the lone shot on goal for the Eagles.
The Cardinal defense continued its strong play in the second half as they held Boston College out of the box and kept them from getting any dangerous chances. The Louisville defense held the Eagles without a shot until the final minute of the half and it was the only shot allowed in the second half.
With the win, the Cardinal defense registered their sixth shutout this season and four of the six shutouts have come at home.
Louisville will stay on campus for their third and final game of the current homestand when it hosts Notre Dame on Saturday, October 15. The Cardinals and Irish will square off at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
