Pedro Fonseca, Josh Jones, Sander Roed and Bradley Sample represented Louisville on the annual team.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Four University of Louisville men's soccer student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Academic team announced by the conference on Thursday.
Pedro Fonseca, Josh Jones, Sander Roed and Bradley Sample were the Louisville representatives on the 62-man team. This marks the second straight All-Academic Team honor for Sample, while the other three each made the team for the first time.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Fonseca turned in a career season during his senior campaign for the Cardinals setting career highs with eight goals, eight assists and 24 points. The two-time All-ACC selection ranked third in the league in assists, fifth in points and seventh in goals. Earlier this month, Fonseca was selected by Real Salt Lake in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.
Jones made an immediate impact in his first season at Louisville, starting 16 of 18 matches at center back for the Cardinals as a freshman. One of six players to log more than 1,400 minutes, Jones finished the year with a pair of goals, including the game-winner in double overtime at Syracuse.
Like Jones, Roed arrived on campus and instantly contributed as a freshman in the fall. The Norwegian midfielder started 14 matches, tallied three goals and finished second on the team with five assists and third with 11 points. Roed earned All-ACC and ACC All-Freshman Team honors, becoming the first UofL freshman to garner All-ACC recognition since Tim Kubel in 2014.
Just the fifth Louisville player to earn multiple All-ACC Academic Team selections, Sample started 17 of 18 matches this season and played every minute in 12 contests. The midfielder notched his lone goal of the season at Virginia Tech, heading home a corner kick.
Louisville finished the 2021 season with a 10-7-1 overall record, capturing the program's first ever ACC Atlantic Division crown and earning a NCAA Tournament berth for the 13th time in 15 seasons.
