No. 5 Cardinals Blow By Hurricanes 3-0

Jones and DeBeer pace Cardinal offense
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Aiko Jones and Anna DeBeer tallied eight kills each to lead No. 5 University of Louisville volleyball past Miami 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 on Friday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

Louisville had 37 kills, hitting .274 with five aces 46 digs and 12 blocks. Nena Mbonu had seven kills and hit .462 with Anna Stevenson adding six kills and a team-high seven blocks while hitting .429 and Amaya Tillman contributing five kills on nine swings with four blocks and a team-high .556 hitting percentage to help power the Cardinals' offense. Tori Dilfer racked up 32 assists and four blocks on the night and Elena Scott lead the team with 17 digs. The Cardinals stay unbeaten at 11-0.Â

Miami had 27 kills and hit .000 with two aces, seven blocks and five service errors. Nyah Anderson led the Canes offense with nine kills and Savanah Vach added 23 assists. With the loss, the Hurricanes move to 9-2 on the season.

Set 1
The Cardinals and Hurricanes traded points early, but Louisville never gave up the lead and eventually took a 9-5 lead. UofL went on a four-point scoring run highlighted by back-to-back kills from Anna DeBeer and Clair Chaussee to take a 15-9 lead into the TV timeout. The Cards carried momentum through the break extending their point streak to seven as they took an 18-9 lead and forced Miami to call its first timeout. Louisville continued to dominate the set, going on another 4-0 run and a 22-10 lead as the Canes called their final timeout of the set. UofL would go on to win the next three points for a second seven-point scoring run and a 25-10 set win.

The second set started much like the first with the teams trading point for point. Miami went on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 7-4 lead as the set paused for a Miami injury. The Cardinals went on a three-point run of their own to get back within one at 8-7. After losing a single point, UofL went on a second 4-0 run for a 11-9 lead. The Hurricanes scratched back into the set, getting back within one after a three-point run brought the score to 15-14. Louisville stayed tough, going on a three-point run of its own to extend the lead to four at 19-15, forcing Miami to take a timeout. Louisville would go on to take the second set 25-21 for a 2-0 match lead.

Another tightly contested start, UofL battled its way to an early 10-5 lead off a 3-0 run to force a Miami timeout. The Cardinals and Hurricanes traded points back-and-forth, but Louisville continued to control the set taking another 3-0 run and a 17-10 lead into the Miami timeout. UofL was red-hot out of the break, rattling five more points for a 9-0 run and a 23-10 lead. Louisville would complete the sweep, winning the third and final set 25-14.

With the win, Louisville collected its ninth sweep and remains undefeated on the season with an 11-0 start. Up next, the Cardinals conclude their short homestand as they take on Florida State on Sunday, Sep. 26 at 1 p.m. ET at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
