Louisville Rallies Back for 3-2 Overtime Win at Miami
September 17, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The Cardinals trailed 2-0 at the half, but Maisie Whitsett’s goal in the second overtime secured the 3-2 win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's soccer rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to win 3-2 in overtime at Miami on Friday night.
Â
With the win, Louisville improves to 5-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Miami falls to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
"We showed courage, determination and a will to win tonight," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "It's never easy to come back from a two-goal deficit, so I'm very proud of our team."
Â
Nina Nicosia had three chances to get on the board early for the Cardinals, but her shots in the 10th, 11th and 21st minutes were all saved by Miami goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais.
Â
Four minutes later, the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead when Jackie Koerwitz's header from the left side went over goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos' head and found Maria Jakobsdottir, who tapped it home.
Â
In the 37th minute, Miami added another goal and the Cardinals went into halftime trailing 2-0 despite finishing the half with 12 shots, six of which were on goal.
Â
In the first minute of the second half, Louisville trimmed the lead in half off a corner kick. Maisie Whitsett sent the ball into the box and Sarah Hernandez headed it to Hayley Howard whose right footed kick found the back of the net.
Â
The score remained 2-1 until the 83rd minute when Ravin Alexander was tackled in the box to draw a penalty kick. Hernandez stepped up and calmly scored to the bottom left of the goal to tie the game.
Â
Whitsett and Nicosia both had chances in the final seven minutes, but could not score and the Cardinals went into overtime for the second straight match.
Â
The Cardinals did not manage a shot in the first overtime, but they made their first shot in the second overtime count. Whitsett took a free kick from the left side in the 105th minute and it weaved its way through traffic and found the right side of the net for the 3-2 win.
Â
The overtime win is the Cardinals' first since a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Vanderbilt on Sept. 15, 2019.
Â
Louisville outshot Miami 22-11 and finished with 10 shots on goal to the Hurricanes' three.
Â
The Cardinals return to action next Thursday at 6 p.m. ET when they play at Syracuse.
