Denton’s Late Goal Propels Louisville to 2-1 Win at Syracuse
September 23, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Anouk Denton’s penalty kick goal in the 90th minute pushed Louisville to a 2-1 win on Thursday night.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Anouk Denton's penalty kick goal in the 90th minute pushed Louisville women's soccer to a dramatic 2-1 win at Syracuse on Thursday night.
With the win, Louisville moves to 6-1-1 on the year and 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Syracuse falls to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.
"We didn't play our best in the first half, but I thought we really regrouped and were much better in the second half," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I'm proud of our team. We fought until the very end and were able to pull out a victory with under a minute to play."
The Cardinals got on the board in the 13th minute when Julia Simon found Delaney Snyder at the top of the box, who gained control of the ball, turned and fired it past the Syracuse goalkeeper to the bottom left corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 until the 69th minute when Syracuse's Meghan Root got behind the Louisville defense and chipped the ball over the head of goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos for the equalizer.
It looked as if the Cardinals would head to their third straight overtime match as the clock approached zeroes, but Simon was fouled in the box to draw a penalty kick with just over 30 seconds remaining.
Anouk Denton stepped up to take the first penalty kick of her career and delivered a dagger to the top right corner of the net to seal the 2-1 victory.
Louisville outshot Syracuse 16-9 on the night and had eight shots on goal to the Orange's six.
Simon led the way with four shots for the Cardinals, while Kouzelos finished with five saves.
After opening conference play with the first two matches on the road, Louisville hosts No. 1 Florida State this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
