LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Coming off a 3-2 come-from-behind double overtime win last Friday at Miami to open Atlantic Coast Conference play, University of Louisville women's soccer plays at Syracuse on Thursday night. The match will begin at 6 p.m. ET and broadcast on ACC Network.
Louisville enters Thursday's match with a 5-1-1 overall record and they are 1-0 in ACC play.
Â
In the comeback win at Miami, the Cardinals used three set piece goals to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit. They cut the lead in half a minute into the second stanza when Hayley Howard scored on Maisie Whitsett's corner kick. Sarah Hernandez then tied it on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. In the 105th minute, Whitsett provided the game-winner via a free kick.
Â
Louisville has played in back-to-back overtime matches for the first time since they tied at Notre Dame on Oct. 13, 2019 (T, 0-0) and No. 9 Duke on Oct. 18, 2019 (T, 1-1). The Cardinals have not played in three straight overtime matches since they played four straight in 2016.
Â
Whitsett played a huge role in the win at Miami, recording an assist and her seventh career game-winner. She is tied for second on the team with six points, two goals and two assists this year and is the Cards' active career leader with 15 goals, 35 points and seven game-winning goals.
Â
Hernandez recorded the first assist of her career with a header on the corner that found Howard for the goal. Later in the 83rd minute, she scored her first career penalty kick goal and the sixth goal of her career. It marked her first goal since she scored the game winner in a 1-0 win over Lipscomb in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 15, 2019.
Â
With the win at Miami, UofL is now 5-3 all-time in ACC openers.
ABOUT THE ORANGE
Syracuse enters Thursday's match with a 4-3-1 record, coming off a 4-0 loss at Notre Dame on Saturday in its ACC opener. They opened the season with wins in four of its first five matches, but are 0-2-1 in their last three. Offensively, they are led by senior midfielder Telly Vunipoia's six points (two goals, two assists). Freshman midfielder Pauline Machtens has two goals on the year and is the only other player with multiple goals on the year. Graduate goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx has 29 saves and a .707 save percentage, while recording four shutouts. Last year, Syracuse finished with a 1-7 record, all of their contests were ACC games.
Series History: Louisville is 7-0-1 all-time against Syracuse and 3-0 at SU Soccer Stadium. The Cardinals have won five straight and have outscored the Orange 9-0 in those five games, including 6-0 in the last two. The lone non-victory for Louisville was a 1-1 tie on Sept. 21, 2012. That match also marked the only time that Syracuse has scored against UofL as the Cardinals have outscored the Orange 14-1 all-time.
Â
Last Meeting (Oct. 1, 2020): Louisville scored three second half goals to win 3-0 over the Orange. Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the first half as they went into the locker room at half with no score. The Cardinals came out with more energy to start the second stanza and got on the board just three minutes into the half. Emina Ekic delivered a corner kick into the box and after Sarah Hernandez's header was blocked, Jessica De Filippo found the ball and delivered it into the back of the net. After recording the assist on the first goal, Ekic then recorded two straight goals to build a 3-0 lead.
